Will The Wii-U Live Upto Expectations?

Will The Wii-U Live Upto Expectations?

Now, when I first heard about the Wii-U’s release I was pretty disappointed that this was the first thing for the eighth generation of home gaming consoles. I did like the Wii (note that I like it for many different reasons to my Xbox 360 and my PS3) and I do like Nintendo however I just believed that they haven’t been releasing anything cutting edge anymore. I was skeptical at first that this was going to be anything new and that it would be worth investing in.

You have a choice if you want to buy the Wii-U. You can have the Wii-U basic, where everything is classic white, or the Wii-U deluxe, where everything is a sleek and sexy looking black. Now both bundles come with of course, the Wii-U, a GamePad, two AC adaptors for both for the controller and console, a HDMI cable and a sensor bar (For the European release). However, if you want to splash the cash even more you can get the Wii-U deluxe that has 32gb memory (unlike the basic which has 8gb internal memory), a Gamepad charging cradle, stands for the console and the Gamepad and the game Nintendoland. So… add super mega awesome extras to the Wii-U and add $150/£95 and you get the Wii-U deluxe essentially. But you can do this a lot cheaper, in fact for as little as £45.

One thing I do like about the Wii-U is definitely the backwards compatibility with the Wii, meaning you can use your Wii remote and Nun chuck on the Wii-U if you so wish. But annoyingly it’s limited, though the list is big.

Now the next thing I’m going to say is about the greater support for non Nintendo family games. This means that you will be seeing games the likes of Assassins Creed 3, Batman Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and many more coming to the Wii-U. This isn’t really that exciting considering most of these games have been released on other consoles and PC and have most likely already been purchased. However some of the exclusive games do look pretty cool with Bayonetta 2 making its way in there and the game I’m most looking forward to testing out ZombiU.

Watching the ZombiU trailer the other day I could see the attraction to the Wii-U. The use of the Wii U game pad will play a heavy role in the game, the combination of touch screen and motion controls give the game a unique edge. Allowing you to control sniping, sonar, maps and more.

Then I saw that there would be a new Super Smash Bros game and I fan-squealed a little bit. See, I do believe that there is a time and place for different games, Nintendo’s family friendly approach bring a sense of nostalgia through countless hours of gaming when I was younger however as I’ve grown older I am into different types of games aswell. The Wii did seem to bring families together and I could see the benefit, however I think that the support for 3rd party games, while good for the companies, will just leave the Wii and the Wii-U without their status as being a family console.

All-in-all I’m pretty excited to test out the Wii-U to see if it lives up to my expectations (which aren’t very high anyway so I probably won’t be disappointed). I want the Wii-U to be a success in a way because I feel like Nintendo are getting ignored and bullied but they will have to pull something big out of the bag if they want to compete with Sony and Microsoft’s next generation of consoles… but for now this is what we have to work with and I say good luck!
