As a fan of the walking dead, both comic series and TV series I feel that I can probably give a good comparison here. After all I did a review on both the walking dead comic series and TV series in the past, and over analysed the hell out of it.
As most people who are reading this will know, The Walking Dead follows Rick Grimes, a police officer who woke from a coma during a zombie apocalypse. This game follows a gentleman who killed his wife and opens with him (you) being taken away by a policeman. Who loves to prod and ask you questions.
After the shit hits the fan you’re pretty much on your own, after a short time you will find some girl who helps you, and then you find more people, this time a familiar face.
The few of you with strong memories will remember one of the people you find pushing a car. But don’t worry if you don’t remember them, because there’s still plenty of characters from the TV and comic series to see and interact with.
The game play is really strange, it’s a cross between first person puzzle and action. You have to think quickly and tactfully. With two game options: Normal (All hints etc one) minimalistic (Obviously less hints etc) now, being a bit of a zombie nut I went for minimalistic. And it did have it’s challenges in certain areas! But not too much of a challenge. I did get stuck trying to figure out how to clear a parking area for awhile
As I mentioned before “Action puzzle” it’s weird, if a zombie attacks you then you have to think fast, try and find a way to kill it, which isn’t usually that hard. But still can prove to be difficult in places. You have to make difficult tactful plans to take out multiple zombies in quick succession.
Obviously the game only has a limited amount of choices you can make, but it plays on that well and makes more linear choices harder to make.
At the end of the episode it adds up all the choices you made and compares them to what other players did (Sort of like what Catherine did.)
The whole game holds together well, but it was very very short. As you probably know it’s only 400 Microsoft points, or $4.99 on PSN. So they can get away with it, because it still has re-playability, you can go back and make different choices.
The whole game is focused on choices, but they’re not like Fable choices (IE, don’t just change things that second) they have long damning effects. And for those wondering, I fucked it up a lot, let’s just say that. But it’s okay watching people get eaten and smashing brains in, because hey, better them than you.
My only small complaint is that two of the three of my favourite characters have already been in it, and they did not stay true to themselves in the slightest. They make good characters still, but they’re not the deep dimension characters I have come to love. Also towards the later issues (85?) I think it may have been, something happens which basically declares all the characters to be insane, but they throw that out straight away in the game, they haven’t reached this in the TV series. Not many people will pick up on it though, I only noticed it because I already knew about it.
Now then, very last thing I have to say! We have an interview with one the guys who worked on the walking dead. If you have any questions, send ‘em in!:
