Made that joke work didn’t I!? No? Fuck you.
I’ve had a long play on this courtesy of the gents at Frogster Interactive. And I think I’ll be throwing money at them for a long time here onwards. The game has a brilliant blend that I can honestly say I don’t think anyone has pulled off as well as these guys.
So, if you’re not familiar with Tera it’s a Massively Multi- MMORPG, I got lazy. And for those of you who don’t know what a MMORPG is, look it up. It’s the classic story, titans are all “Yo bro” then titans fall asleep, tiny titans appear on dream world made up from big titans, shit hits the fan.
Nah, seriously. Basically there’s a big war on a world crafted from the dreams of two titans. But, after the big war none of the tiny titans are left, this is where the game takes place, after the war. It’s up to you and other players to group together and fight off “Argons” nasty pasties who want to wake the super titans up, thus ending the dream, thus ruining the world.
The game has 7 races, each look pretty, erm, lame. No matter how you try, your character is going to look like either a lady boy or a furry. Though I must admit the furry (Poporis) are pretty damn adorable, they’re like guinea pigs with an axe, and you can make them look like a panda. A panda with a face on its back! Holy shit right? Two face panda.
What I was constantly told is that the other versions of the game (Asian and American) are a lot more fun, I got mixed reasons why, but there was a recurring one: “On the other version I can make my character almost completely naked” I must have heard something around those lines as a response in atleast 8 out of 10 people, which was kind of creepy.
The character customization did blow my mind a bit, I must say. There was a lot to pick from, almost infinite differences could be made, with a huge colour palette to sweeten the deal.
There are 8 classes to pick from, archer, berserker, lancer, mystic, priest, slayer, sorcerer and warrior. To be honest, all of them are pretty fun to play, and each one feels very unique, not like some games where there are around 10 classes, but only 2 of them actually feel different.
The game doesn’t cut off the customisation at character creation. It goes right through as you level, as you pick up skills and abilities along the way. You can change how powerful these are with “Glyphs”. Now that doesn’t sound like much, but what it means, is that effectively you can have an archer that’s great and getting up close and shooting lots of arrows, or one that stands back and fires a few extra strong arrows. However, I notice that people tend to stay on a pretty set path for each class.
The world of Tera is pretty damn big, and pretty damn fancy! The graphics are clearly something they spent a lot of time on. You can really appreciate the whole map, it’s as if the trees are genuinely alive and the world is breathing, you can really get sucked into the atmosphere.
Gameplay next! The game obviously has very heavy RPG elements, skilling, levelling and speccing all come into play. But we see real time combat! This means it’s up to you to dodge, smack and somersault, as well as everything in between.
The combat pits you right into the fight, rather than mind numbing clicks you have to actually pick some tactics and use a mix of attacks and dodges to win. There’s also a Omni-present sense of danger, with a mix of hostile and friendly NPCs scattered across Tera.
Perhaps one of the simplest, yet greatest things about Tera is the option to plug in a controller, so I felt quite at home with my Xbox 360 pad.
The quests are very diverse, but do have a very sluggish feel to start with. However that has come to be expected, there’s only so much you can do with a quest, and they do a lot make it fun and interesting.
So, this game has a huge amount of customisation going for it, on skills and levelling, not just character creations, and very gripping gameplay, the story is a little dull, but I think it’s more than worth your time.
