Suck on my barrel, alien scum! (EDF review)

July 25, 2011 |  by  |  Reviews

Earth Defence Force recently pulled out a new game, what they lack in the first they seem to have improved in this one.

For people who played the first one, I imagine they would know that there was one big thing missing, and for people who haven’t played the first, I’ll tell you: Online Co-Op.

The game has always been about being outnumbered about 50,000 to one, however due to having three player Co-Op it is now about having 50,000 to three, the whole game feels a lot more insane and crazy with explosions than it’s predecessor, and to be honest I pissing love it.

It seemed like an odd choice to have three player Co-Op (six for survival) but I can see why they chose three player. I feel that anymore and then the game would just have too many explosions and your teammates would be getting flung around like turd in a monkey exhibit at the zoo.

So, I imagine those of you who remember the first remember the amount of guns you could get? Well fear not, because there’s a stupid amount of them in this one too. (As in a lot, not a few) Everything from assault rifles to six-rocket firing beasts from hell.

There’s been some gameplay changes too, you sometimes sit in a helicopter and take control of a big-ass machine gun (So not very often) it’s still great when you do. There’s not as many vehicles, but not that many are really needed because you’ll usually be grouped together with the enemy, and the sprint button works a treat if you do fall behind.

They have thrown a story over it, but it’s not a complex one, this game does not need a complex story, if anything this would ruin the 50s B-movie-esque style of the game. There’s also a little nice bits here and there, such as colour changing. One of the biggest changes is probably classes.

Each class has special abilities, I played mostly as tactical, who sets up turrets and radars to aid the team. And while he’s no tank, he certainly helps the tank. The other classes are “Jet” a sort of sniper that can fly (I know, holy crap right!?) Trooper, as standard as it gets he has a faster reload time, and finally “Battle” this guy is the tank, he can shit out damage like a rocket pooping rocket with diarrhea, the game has something pretty close to that actually.

The survival mode is near impossible, so having six players for that is just lovely.
So the game may be a sequel but it feels like a masterpiece, replay value, fun, humour and big, big, big explosions.

My only issues were:

It was too short

There wasn’t big enough enemies

There’s no disco ball robot poopin’ boss, this makes me sad. But there are still a few big bosses, and believe me they’re big.

I strongly suggest you go and buy this, right now.
