Speed runs are a dignified niche of the gaming community, and the Speed Demo’s Archive keep track of the top dog glitch-hunters. To be qualified in the SDA, you can’t cheat, hack or alter scripts – you basically have to get lucky finding a glitch and speed through entire levels in a matter of seconds.
That being said, how long did it take you to finish the original Portal? 9 hours? 6? 4!? That’s great! Well, it would be, if it weren’t in comparison to the current record holder – SourceRuns.
Valve’s highly praised puzzle platformer, Portal, is a huge participant in the SDA, because its central game-play mechanic (of literally ‘portal-ing’ through levels and thus skipping areas entirely) is a dream come true for the dedicated speedsters in the PC gaming community. With a lot of perfect timing, precision jumping, careful placement and pure skill, Portal’s record speed run was set to just over 8 minutes last week.
Way back in December 2009, a guy who goes by the name of ‘DemonStrate’ officially completed the game in just over 10 minutes. SourceRuns absolutely demolished this score, with their run timing in at a whopping 8:31. Their run was done entirely without scripts, cheats or hacks, but utilized glitches already present in the game – making it SDA legal.
On YouTube, they said, “This run first started after the discovery of a new glitch, which snowballed into a whirlwind of discoveries of new tricks, skips, and glitches. We started running chambers in April, took a brief hiatus, and then resumed work in late June. The bulk of the run was completed in about 2 weeks time.”
That’s a lot of perfect planning, glitch-hunting and a hell of a lot of ambition on SourceRun’s behalf. It’s going to take years to beat their latest record, but you can find their record run on YouTube. Care to give it a try for yourself? I didn’t think so…
