My Love-Hate Relationship With Peter Molyneux

My Love-Hate Relationship With Peter Molyneux

October 17, 2012 |  by  |  Editorials

Ever since I can remember, I’ve had mixed emotions about Peter Molyneux. First I looked up to him, and then hated him, then hated him more, but I can’t help and think “You’re pretty great” When I hear him talk.

It all started in 1997, when Peter Molyneux managed to get his team to work on Black & White, one of the most ambitious and honestly, greatest games to date. I was so impressed to see someone would pay so much towards seeing his creation come to life, to see someone have so much faith in a team that he would pay $6 Million towards it.

Then he blessed us with Fable, another cult classic, and he really pulled out all of the stops right up until Fable 2, where things were okay but getting a little rocky. But he seemed excited about it, so I went ahead and picked it up, as most people did. And while it wasn’t the worst piece of shit in the world it wasn’t the same great standard I had come to expect from Lionhead or Peter Molyneux.

But all that changed on Fable 3, honestly I felt like Peter Molyneux has just whipped out a middle finger on the game. After hearing him talk and promise all these great features, and to finish it in a day or two with all the side quests? It was just a giant kick in the nad-knockers.

Then it was just a steep face fuck down hill from there, project Milo was showcased at E3, then cancelled. Which was one of those ambitious projects but I think we have other people to blame for that, not Peter Molyneux. Then we had Fable: The Journey, which he hardly worked on, which makes me ponder where will the Fable Series go from here? Is it a big enough series to continue? Or with Petey out of the picture will it die?

Recently, we saw the announcement of Curiosity, a game where you tap. And no, not like that, literally tap a screen. I was in a fury when he announced that whole $50,000 DLC shite, calling something an experiment doesn’t make it moral. I even wanted him to sign a poster with “I’m a lying cock” on it, I was going to ask him “Do you think it’s fair to lie to gamers and constantly disappoint them?” but, as I sat watching and listening at the Eurogamer Expo Developer conference…I couldn’t help but think “Actually, you’re a pretty great guy.” he gave out his e-mail encouraging people to e-mail him if they wanted a job. He really sold the idea of curiosity to me, and I don’t even know how!

I really don’t know if I should admire Peter Molyneux or not, but I’m impressed that he can sell an idea to me, that I originally hated more than anything on the market.
