MMORPG Survey created by a Gamer

September 1, 2010 |  by  |  News

Please help a fellow gamer by taking a brief survey.

I am a sociology graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University and have combined my love of gaming with my thesis research. If you are interested in participating in a survey of MMORPG players, please visit my research web site: Click Here to Start Survey

All survey answers will be anonymous, and no personal information is requested. Thank you!

  1. I decided to also fill out this survey. Especially seeing how I have been playing MMO’s since 1996, and I have played in them professionally. I put in my two cents, and actually the reason why I have quit for the past months now to tell you the truth. It tears me apart to know that MMO developers will not listen to their actual gamer crowd, and beckon more to the world. Another reason why I am playing a lot more RTS/shooter gamers. This is when you wish old habits would die hard.

    • I don’t mean to sound bitter though. it’s just after 14 years, you would think that they would have got it by now. I’m also not one of those type of gamers to rant and not provide a solution. I have provided many solutions that are possible to do. Then again, business is business.

      • This is just a touchy subject for me, because I have invested so many years in this genre of gaming, which is why I keep coming back to justify myself. I don’t hate all MMO’s , I just despise one in particular for feeding the needs of non – gamers and creating such a fiasco of self centered people. That would be the world of warcraft. I played WoW through all of the current expansion ( also did professional gameplay with that ). I think after five to six years after playing that game, four accounts fifteen max level characters later, it’s safe to say that game is not for gamers, but for everyone else. It would have been great though if blizzard stuck to their guns like they normally did. Seems as though the WoW dev team crumbled under the pressure of 11 million people. Another downfall for any MMO.

In other words, people play games for only four reasons. Fun, Immersive, Boredom or Competitive. Addiction is developed by one of those four. When you include all four in a game, you attract the world, that those gamers have tried to stay out of by gaming. We all have issues and normally just wish to do our thing. When you take something we have tried to escape and toss it into one of our games, that is when I draw the line. I then go find another game. Sadly WoW has literally taken over the MMO genre, so now I have reduced my self to lush story single player games. At the least, I know they are going to guarantee me that fix needed to pull me away from the worlds drama, media and ignorance that turns into arrogance. Normally it’s because most people think ” meh it’s online, these people don’t exist.” If that is how you think you are sadly mistaken, which again is why I favor the hardcore gamer over any typical casual man, woman or child.

At the least who ever reads this and understands what I am speaking of and will know why I typed this.

    • I do understand and appreciate what you are saying in all of your comments. Thank you for your input and for taking the survey. I see gaming, in general, becoming less “specialized”, to where those who play games, such as MMOs may not consider themselves “gamers” per se. However, now the population for developers to please has grown and diversified. I’ve tired of playing WoW, because it seems like there isn’t any substance anymore, also because some players are downright mean. I now prefer to play single player RPG type console games to temporarily take me away from the world when I need a break.

  2. I’ve been passing it around, I know a few people who should fill it in. It’s not exactly long so they should manage it haha

  3. Thank you for your interest in my research. I will be writing my thesis after I analyze the results, which should all be completed sometime in the spring. I will be sure to post the results after I have completed the study and my thesis has been approved. I am exploring how the nature of social interaction is changing in the modern era, especially through online games. I need some responses from new gamers as well, so if you or anyone else knows anyone, please forward the survey information along. Thanks again!

  4. I’ve done it, good survey look forward to seeing what you do with the information!
