MK 9 BALANCED?!?! YOUR OPINION?
Hello readers I was playing some MK 9 today as I have been everyday since it came out (shame on me) and had some thoughts. This new MK title has for me really brought the series back to it’s roots where it belongs. The brutality has been dialed up to 10 and the characters are more in depth. The feeling of most characters having low punch, high punch, low kick, high kick, and some specials is over with. The main issue I wanted to bring up and I am not sure if it’s a negative one is the balance. The first few days I had the game I spent most of my time playing story mode. I thought this was a good way to find the two or three characters I wanted to invest time in. I have always loved Subzero but I was looking for the best character to compete online with. My first impression was that each character had some good combo’s at least one juggle move and really felt like an individual. The team at NetherRealm Studios really nailed it and I thought wow what a polished in depth fighting game.
The days started to pass and I settled on my usual favorite Subzero and a new favorite Nightwolf to really study, and learn. I started to play online in some friendly King of The Hill matches and all was good in the world. Now around the fourth or fifth day playing online I started to realize something, and get ready for this revelation its going to blow your mind. I realized to compete online you NEED a character with a TELEPORT. This really pained me and made me realize thats the one part of the game that isn’t balanced. The three characters whose teleports really have an advantage are Smoke, Sektor, and Scorpion. I found myself constantly losing to characters with teleports because I was using my two favorites Subzero or Nightwolf. I was reading strategy guides and making an effort to learn how to combat these teleports but nothing helped.
Is it the hair or the teleport?!?!
The fact is this has me so upset I decided to write about it, and I want you the reader’s opinion. Is it just a simple fact that I need more practice? Is it a correct assumption that you just need to have a teleport move to compete online? I really was hoping that this fighting game wouldn’t force me to choose from a select few characters. The character model’s and moves are so well done I hate to see some characters just thrown out because they lack one type of move. Well hit the comments up and let me know your opinion on the topic. Thanks for reading and if you want to do battle Shincarnage is my xbox live tag.

The teleports are a pain in the ass but there is usually a way to turn it against them if they use it in excess. For example scorpions teleport kick can be countered simply by ducking and delivering a swift uppercut to the chops. Quite satisfying
Story mode for me has a strange difficulty spike towards the middle/end. The game does a genius thing though of altering the difficulty itself if you lose a few times, so the game gets gradually easier for you if you get stuck on one part.
I wouldn’t say online is unbalanced though. Yes there is a lot of people spamming moves with the same characters, but look at SSIV’s online at the start. Everyone picked Ken for what seemed like 3 or 4 months straight. Once people figure out a smooth and reliable counter to the spammers, then it stops being an issue. I for example have found great methods with Nightwolf and Sindel, so now every time I encounter a Smoke or a Scorpion, they don’t stand a chance.
Also Trout, only the 3 boss characters are un-grabbable. Maybe try not trying to just grab people all the time. All the “issues” you pointed out in your review were false too.
I love the game, and I’m king of my ‘hood (which includes my brother and wife as my only local competition). I am just notoriously bad at fighting games online though. I believe it’s just on a different level of gameplay…except for Noob, who is a little cheap.
I am not convinced that the game is unbalanced, because in my experience the speed and combo characters are balanced out by the damage dealing characters.
The game also has many different types of modes from story mode which gives a broad spectrum of the story. Arcade mode, which gives a specific character ending, Ladder mode is an awesome online experience, the Challenge tower is very unique and offers some fun experiences and learning opportunities.
It just seems like everyone is so very critical of this game – despite it’s positives and how the series stepped it’s game up from Armageddon and MK vs DCU. I value everyones opinions, and maybe I’m just a poor fanatik. But I don’t see the major issues with the game.
Also I hate Smoke’s long hair costume – wtf is up with that?
It’s like the non-grab-able characters, this game just has too many issues.
