GAME REVIEW

The fighting game community has been waiting for this sequel for over ten years now. I was very excited to pick up my copy on launch day (I don’t do midnight releases incase you’re wondering) and jump right in and test the waters. I wanted to spend a good amount of time with this game before writing the review. I wanted to make sure I spent time with every character and aspect of the game to give a fair review. I have logged in so far around 15-20 hours with the game, and let me say its a blast. The world’s versus players will surely be playing this game for another decade.

RAGING DEMON IS BACK!

The amount of time that Capcom took to pay attention to the details really shines here. The fact that characters have certain trash talk phrases for others is a lot of fun to see. The art style is very kind to the eyes just a perfect blend of cell shading and comic book design. The game cruises in the frame rate department. I have yet to see any slow down besides lag issues which of course have nothing to do with the frame rate. Now many of you hardcore fans of the series are probably asking do returning characters play the same? The answer is yes and no for example Akuma one of my favorite characters does alot more damage this time around(note you will lose health quickly in this game), also his raging demon is once again worth saving the super bars for. The other part of the answer is he has the same move set he has always had. Iron man on the other hand plays basically the same as he always has.

The new additions to the series are all very solid characters and are very enjoyable to use. My favorite addition is Dante (being a HUGE Devil May Cry Fan) he has literally the most moves out of any character in the game. Some other honorable mentions are Chris Redfield, X-23, Deadpool, and Arthur. The game does have some aspects that keep it from being a perfect title though. The online play can become a bit laggy, also the menu system could have been better. The one aspect that really burns me is not being able to spectate others matches while you wait to battle. The other issue with online play is some times being able to find a ranked match can be frustrating. The menu will just keep saying “lost connection to host” but I’m sure things will be cleaned up soon.

The other issue I have with the title is well bitter sweet. The games characters are very well balanced for the most part. The job Capcom did in balancing the characters is a HUGE improvement over MVC2. The problem is one character seemed to have slipped through the cracks and his robot name is Sentinel. The amount of health and damage this character can dish out is way over powered, and needs to be patched right away. The fact that Sentinel’s moves are mostly one button press to dish out major damage also very annoying. There is a rumor going around that code for Frank West and Dr. Octopus in on the disc but were they just scrapped, or DLC that will one day be released? The one character I didn’t mention above as a favorite new addition is mostly because I can’t stand facing off against him, but Wesker is quite possibly the best character in the game. His speed, power, and ability to teleport all over the screen make him a scary foe. There is no way to predict were he will end up next and the only character to compare him to is Neo from The Matrix.

The X-FACTOR:

This paragraph may look out of place but this is a subject that needs to be mentioned in my review. I am not sure why Capcom felt they needed to include X-Factor mode in this game, but maybe it was to level the playing field? This mode can be used at any time during a match to activate it you push all four attack buttons at once. The character will then start to glow red and deal more damage and regain health. The trick to this mode is it lasts the longest and it is the strongest when only one character is left alive on your team. If you use the X-Factor right away it will only last a few seconds, but if you use it with one character remaining it lasts a full thirty seconds. Now having played this game for twenty or so hours I can tell you I have used both Akuma, and Dante with very little health left in X-Factor mode to take down entire teams. To say this mode is a game changer isn’t even giving it enough credit. This doesn’t per say take away from the game, but I can’t help but wonder what Capcom was thinking here? The characters have been balanced, and do enough damage already without the X-factor being introduced.

OVERALL:

The over all feel of the game is amazing and all though the combat is slower paced than the last two titles in the series it shines regardless. The arcade and mission modes will keep you busy, and of course the online player and ranked lobbies will be seeing hyper combos flying for years to come. Now what are you waiting for get out there and find your favorite mix of Capcom and Marvel characters to dish damage with. On a side note, readers leave some comments with what characters you are the most excited to use. I myself can’t get enough of Akuma, Dante, and Wolverine.

AOF ADDICTION LEVEL: 9/10

  1. When I first seen that this game was being developed I was a little skeptical at first. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a solid title. But since I first played it I find it to be tight.I love playing online (when it’s working). The characters they have on the roster is great. Although I would have like to see my dude Jin back on the mix. Overall it’s well balanced and hopefully some DLC will come our way and get more characters. Anybody wants to play, hit me up on 360 at CptBountyHunter.

  2. Still unsure if I prefer 2 or 3, but 3 is pretty awesome. The online is absolutely broken from head to toe though. Ranked and Player matches only ever work if you try them 6 times in a row, and god forbid you get a ranked match because 99% of the time you will face Dante, Akuma, and Sentinel and they will sit in the far corner, spamming 1 button on a loop. Same with casual lobbies. People forget it’s only a game and will just pick the strongest characters and spam them.

Offline (or playing with people you know) is where the game becomes fun. It’s got great characters to pick from (my team is Felicia, Tron Bonne and She Hulk at the minute) and it’s so easy to pick up and play.

Add me on FreezeCarl5000 if you want to be destroyed by Miss Tron.

  3. Great review. And I love the X-Factor. If you use it strategically, anyone can win.

  4. This game has the potential to bleed me dry over with DLC. I can’t wait till I pick up this game! X-Factor sounds interesting, saving your best character for last and all.

    • X-Factor sounds great let me know what you think of it after you face it lol. It really changes the game up for sure and certain characters in X-Factor mode like Sentinel will make you cry.
