Lost Planet is working towards the third installment, the niche with the second game was all about co-op, the first game was all about survival, and this game seems to be about sympathy.
While playing Lost Planet 3 at the Eurogamer Expo We asked what seperates it from the other games in the series, and the lady (Audrey) at the booth told us that they want to play on the sympathy vote with the character a little. Which will come at little surprise, the game follows Jim Peyton who is a rig pilot. He’s trying to earn enough money to return to his family, however what is really interesting to me is that he clearly looks like a certain character that gamers already love, a certain dead one…
Want to see another? Think of Bernadette Mataki, again from Gears of War. This one isn’t really as close, but it still had her jump to mind when I saw this character in Lost Planet 3.
But most of all, the game play! Audrey was in charge on the Lost Planet 3 stand at the Eurogamer expo, and she’s a big gamer. So when we heard her say “Lost Planet 3 Reminds me of Gears of War” We were pleased, at least she didn’t try to hide it! And even the PR for Capcom said “I don’t think it’s an unfair comparison”. It has a cover system, blind fire, sprint and even the characters feel like they’re right from the Gears of War universe, their build is really similar. To the point I said “I’ve got to say, this feels a lot like Gears of War.” To which the Capcom staff member replied “I said that! I like Gears of War though. They’re aiming for the pity in the story with this character.” So it strikes me that Capcom are trying to gain extra pity by using a dead character. We will see Jim Peyton – The protagonist in Lost Planet 3 battle against the extreme conditions of E.D.N 3 on foot and in his giant utility rig. We see Jim struggling a lot, but he seems to be more than capable of handling himself.
As I mentioned, the game plays a lot more like Gears of War, on foot at least – it really felt like a new gears of war game. However, when we jump into the rig the game is transformed, the rig is a giant robot that feels a little like a dreadnaught. It’s a giant with powerful capabilities, it makes real short work of Akrid. In the demo we were pitted against a new kind of Akrid, a giant scorpion that spits acid at you. In the rig you can grab the tail and stab it with a drill, it’s a wonderful feeling and sight of blood and t-energy firing everywhere! The giant scorpion isn’t just something you fight in the rig though, you’ll have to figure out how to kill it on foot too (the glowing red bit is a hint). The rig also comes with a funny hook thing, which to me just meant hook a duck, but it was far more awkward to use than I would have liked.
What is really interesting about this game is the harvesting mechanic. You plant thermal posts to extract thermal energy, which is used to get upgrades and new weapons and the longer you leave it in the more energy you’ll earn. However, this comes with the chances of helping akrid reproduce, which means you’ll have to kick some arse.
We are also promised bigger enemies, intense gameplay and gameplay changes depending on the environment. Look out for Lost Planet 3, early 2013.
