Jump some comics! (Comic jumper review)

Jump some comics! (Comic jumper review)

So the latest of the crazy Twisted Pixel games, comic jumper follows the adventures of captain smiley as he jumps from comic to comic trying to earn money to re make his own comic.

As always Twisted Pixel give us a lot of humour, this is clear almost instantly. Welcoming us as a bank robbery, in which Captain Smiley leaves his associate tied up rigged up to a load of explosives. Of course there’s a bad guy there, he’s a little odd to say the least, wearing some kind of weapon on his head, that actually does nothing, he adds sound effects. And yes, it’s meant to do nothing.

As we progress we see great characters, villains and heros a like; from over the top stereotypical English mini golf enthusiasts to incredibly racist Asian heroes.
They do however, note that this is racist, and they justify it by stating that the character is set in a comic from the silver age (1956-1970) which had massive censors over violence and profanities, yet a strong fist of racism in almost every comic. Due to it being set in a different time, they can arguably pull it off because it’s just making it more authentic.

Twisted Pixel really push the line on this, as we hop from comic to comic bullying each one in many ways, I would be amazed if many fans don’t argue about this, I myself don’t really mind a great deal. But I can see it being an issue.

Anyway! Moving on, gameplay at first seems to mix all different kinds of games, over the shoulder shooter, classic style, side scroll beat ‘em up, and run ‘n’ gun. But sadly, even after this they sort of over do it. It becomes pretty annoying and repetitive over time.

The game allows you to pull off some crazy stuff, like sliding under bullets and even calling in Twisted Pixel to defeat everyone on the screen. In a crazy kung fu way.

We see the game divided into two ways, missions and campaign.
The missions are just little side missions that give you extra money, and I’m sure you can figure out what campaign is.
The campaign is pretty short, eleven levels long, divided into three sets of three and two separate ones.

Each comic is given a slice of the division, a set of three levels, (Aside from the two captain smiley comics) They are, Nanoc; a barbarian style comic in which Captain Smiley must find the chieftain of a camp. The improbable paper pals, a silver age comic in which Captain Smiley must find someone else…(Yeah there’s a pattern forming here) And the third is a manga, where you have to find Brad.

So the campaign isn’t as boasting as originally anticipated, especially with the rise from 800 MSP to 1200. But, none the less I enjoyed this game and any Twisted Pixel fan will be happy to see extras, even more Splosion Man levels! So I will have to say this is definitely a decent buy, a little over hyped on my half. But the extras really make it worth it.
