Is It Bad This Is The Only Playable Woman In Call Of Duty?

The iconic Call of Duty series is now almost 10 years old, player have stopped wars, caused them and even stabbed people to the Russian national anthem. That last one was the best, really. But, it’s worth taking into consideration that a female character has never been playable.

But, more importantly does it really make much of a difference? When it comes to games like Left 4 Dead and Borderlands each character shouts out something different, in Call of Duty they more just make loud painful squeals.

However, the playable woman is in the zombie mode, a novelty extra in which each character does make a fair bit of speech. Picking gender doesn’t directly affect the gameplay obviously, but if they speak it has much more of an impact. Drawing us back to the title, what exactly do we mean by “Bad”? Well, it can mean a few things.

Some people have said it is unfair because you can’t play as a woman, and it’s a little sexist. Where as I prefer to take a darker swing on it “I can’t shoot at women.” From my view, I still can’t really do that. But seriously, is this a step in the right direction or does it not really matter?

You can’t customize your characters a great deal, and you never really see them unless you’re dying. Though it looks like you might see them more on this one, as they climb around on the bus etc. But why do we want to actually play as a woman? Is it just gamers feel that it is a little unequal? Or is it just because we want to for no real reason?

“Bad” could also mean that in contrast it’s letting you watch a woman get eaten by zombies, but quite frankly if that upsets you then you can fuck off.

By “Bad” we were basically aiming at “Has it taken far too long?” well, personally I don’t really mind too much. Because the game doesn’t have any real customization, so it’s not like they take pride in being able to have all these various bits ‘n’ bobs, where as a game like HALO has all different kinds of armour. So if it had customization to the level of HALO maybe I’d expect to be able to play as a woman.

One thing that does interest me is that there hasn’t been a single playable woman in the campaign, I’m not quite bold enough to say “A woman in campaign” in case I’m wrong. But the campaign is focusing more and more on story, is it time for a change or not? Should we expect to see a woman in campaign, or online? Aside from the zombies mode? Is this even a big deal?

    • Just to throw this out there, you could play as Sarah Michelle Gellar in the original Black Ops Zombies, but that just further supports your argument. I would love to see playable women in FPS games. Anya Stroud in Gears of War 3 is a bad ass and let’s not forget that there are two FPS games with a main female lead: Perfect Dark and Perfect Dark…[Read more]
