I Miss Those Runescape Years

I Miss Those Runescape Years

September 24, 2012 |  by  |  Editorials

Before World of Warcraft came into my life, I was a Runescape addict. It was two memorable years of my life, 2005-2007, that I will never forget.

Even though I don’t play the game anymore, I check on the site every now and then just to see what’s going on. I’ve noticed the designs and visual effects on Runescape have definitely changed for the better. It’s quite amazing to see the new version of Runescape. I get a flashback every now and then, reminding myself of the amazing years I’ve spent playing that game. I had another flashback just a few days ago, and I felt I should share with everyone my story about the years I’ve spent playing Runescape.

It was back in 2005. I just finished middle school. My summer was boring since everything that I did with my friends was the same old thing. I started to get addicted to computers, whether it was doing research or playing online games that were just coming out.

While I was on YouTube one day, this online video game was being advertised like a maniac. It was driving me nuts. It definitely caught my attention when it came to wanting to know what this game was. I created an account and started playing Runescape as a mage (obviously).

Runescape was the beginning of everything in my life when it came to online games: constant hours on the computer, coming up with fan fiction, meeting players in real life, etc. I would spend hours upon hours playing this game. I couldn’t get enough of leveling my mage. I wanted my character to be the best mage in the game.

One funny story I’ll never forget that kind of spiraled out of control was when I got married on Runescape. Marriages are not really an option in the game. You and your other friends in the game have to make up a wedding, thereby making it look like one. Well knowing me being very imaginative, I began to think I was married in real life. I was thirteen years old at the time.

I remember telling my parents that I was married and we were going to have a son (a player in the game decided to take on the role). Both of my parents cursed me out and threated to ban computers from my life for a lifetime. It was very crazy.

One such memorable time was the fan fiction me and the other players created on our own. Me and two other friends knew we really weren’t doing what we were doing in the game. So we would make up stuff like “I’m going to search for Ragnarok, even though I’m level 1.” All three of us knew we weren’t ready to face the main villain in the game. So we decided to come up with my own stories in class. It was our way of making it real.

I spent two years playing that game until I stopped. I had to deal with World of Warcraft along with high school. It was like Runescape was my middle school computer adventure. There are times when I do miss it. I might return to it one day. But right now, all I’m doing is enjoying are the memories that this iconic RPG multiplayer online game gave me.
