Hands On ZombiU Preview – The Next Big Survival Horror Game?

October 1, 2012 |  by  |  News, Previews

We managed to line up for ZombiU without blowing our brains out! And it only took us around 2 hours…

So what did we actually think? Well it’s different, at least. The idea is that the game focuses on you being a survivor, not a god. So it plays like you’re in an actual zombie apocalypse, well, as far as we can guess. This means you’ll reuse bolts, have to carry equipment over your head in water (Making you more or less defenceless). And even think about how close enemies are, certain weapons make louder noises and attract more.

The game is less about fighting hordes and more about avoiding them. There will be lots of unpleasant surprises and really brings me back to my survival horror days. As I swing my bat around trying to knock zombies on the head, worrying I’m about to get eaten from behind.

The demo saw me crawling through sewers and deep narrow tunnels, they’ve really done well with this, shadows creep up the walls, first 1, then 2, and as I spin around to get a bit of space, there’s a zombie behind me! I pulled a face a little like this…

So how does the game actually play? Well honestly, it’s a little awkward. But when I’m at an expo, with a brand new controller and game system it’s going to be tough for the game to make a great impression to me. I can however, say that it all holds together well and that I’m confident in a comfortable environment it will work really nicely. The game doesn’t make you flail around you around like an idiot, but rather uses light motion controls.

The only issue I really had was snapping your neck up and down too much really began to strain a little, but it’s not a major issue, especially if you’re smart enough to move the pad up rather than panicking like I did.

If they play this right, they’ll play into a much missed, and much wanted genre.
