Hands On: Dishonored - Will It Live Up To The Hype?

Hands On: Dishonored – Will It Live Up To The Hype?

In the run up to Dishonored I was really, really excited but after getting hands on with it at the Eurogamer Expo I can say I’m seriously considering cancelling my pre-order.

We’ll start with a general look at the theme, it has that very popular and under used steampunk style. This mashed in the dark atmospheric maps seemed to work a treat, but in practice we see a lot of it fall to pieces, there isn’t really a whole great deal of atmosphere in the game from what I had played. With that being said, I do always admit that it’s hard to sit and get a good feel for a game at an expo. And to be fair, I’m still optimistic that they may have some atmospheric areas.

The demo allowed us to make full use of powers, unlocking all of them for us, but none really seemed to be much fun to use, you can do some pretty cool stuff but it got a bit dull after using them once or twice. And while you can do some pretty awesome stuff like take over someone, freeze time, and move them infront of their own bullet (That’s pretty awesome – right?) It still only has a “Wow” factor for about half a minute.

The game gloated an interesting free running aspect which just didn’t show in the demo, I attempted to try and cram in some jumping and was hit by invisible walls. Which never bodes well.

The game is said to be around 8 hours, assuming you do all side quests – which to me, is a decent amount of time. Apparently people are beating it in under 4 hours, and we have been told the game has a lot of replayability, which makes me wonder if the story is actually any good. The game has painted itself as a great game with a deep universe, but I’m beginning to question if it will live up to the hype it has set. Or if the story, and universe are even half as deep as I had hoped.

The game has great sound effects, I don’t think I’ve ever fired a more satisfying revolver, but the voice acting made me literally laugh out loud.

Obviously, I only played a demo but I’m seriously unsure if this game is going to be as good as anyone had originally hoped. It has a very RAGE feel to it, with body looting and various other things that seem to only be apparent when playing. You can pick if that’s good or bad.

I’m half expecting a flood of “CVG gave it a 9.5” and I’ll say “I was the guy with the balls to say the Mass Effect 3 ending was pants.”, or I will probably just ignore you.
