Gadget Show Live First Look And FREE Stuff

April 10, 2012 |  by  |  Events

It was great to finally get to see the Gadget Show Live first hand, every now and then we angry internet beasts need to divert our anger and grumpy ways onto the unsuspecting public.

As you know by now, we focus on games, but when someone dangles a Jet Pack in front of you and says “Want to see?” You don’t say no, you steal one.

The Gadget Show is located in the over sized NEC (Birmingham) ironically, the escalators were broken. After several long walks we got to the entrance (They really were long, okay I like to moan, but damn.) Anyway! I had hoped they would greet us in a crazy gadget way, like with a robot or hologram, but apparently the world hasn’t hit that paranoia filled period yet, instead fleshy humans greeted us. Or atleast I think they were humans? Skynet! Skynet!

After the undercover robots gave us our passes we toddled inside, instantly greeted by the guys at SCAN (http://www.scan.co.uk/) They had some of the most stupid equipment I had ever seen, but with a “special show” price tag of only £5500 who could resist? Actually in all fairness, it was a damn awesome PC. Check out some of the set ups they had on the show floor:

We quickly got sick of looking at PCs we will never, ever be able to afford and moved on to annoy 2K, who were show casing their new upcoming game “Spec Ops the line”

Now, a lot of our readers like us because we look out for innovation, unique ideas and upcoming indie projects and games. A lot more of our readers hate us for the exact same reason. So this will get mixed feelings, upon finishing the demo I said “It feels like a third person Call of Duty”, to my surprise they seemed very pleased, joyous and flattered. It is more like the good Call of Duty games, where the shot gun doesn’t fire across the map

Perhaps the biggest improvement this has over Call of Duty is that when you shoot a team mate they die, not shout at you for killing them, although the mission still ends. I really liked killing innocent animals such as birds and deer too.

All in all it held up much better than Call of Duty, pulling well on emotion and putting you face to face with death and torture, pain and misery. I really hope they keep it up beyond the demo, the game is shaping up great. Also it opens with you in a helicopter on a mini gun, which is always good.

I have always wanted some cool eye wear, and a decent priced 3DTV, so when I heard about glasses that could turn your TV in to 3DTV that is the size of a cinema I got a “little” excited. Not willing to pop £600 for glasses, I held off. And boy I’m glad I did! They just simply didn’t work. I thought maybe it was because I’m (a little) colour blind, with red, green and blue. But my colleague confirmed that they just suck.

The screen is tiny, it blurs, and it doubles. The way 3D works in films and games is that it is shot from two angles. So, the way the glasses work is that there are two tiny screens, that are meant to merge together to create the illusion of one big screen, but they don’t. They look like two small, blurry screens.

We thought it was due time to look at overclockers (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/), and drool over yet more expensive PC hardware we will never, ever get. Check out this bad boy, keep an eye on the right:

It’s a fucking Mini Gun! On the mother board! I could be spraying, praying, AND shouting “Taste my momma’s mini gun!”This lovely bit of kit is called “MSI Big Bang Xpower II(2) Motherboard” anything with “Big” and or “Bang” in it, followed by “Motherboard” should be in every PC, all of them.

Sniper Elite next! Now, if you’re interested in this get the demo. Play it, love it, hate it, shit on it. Whatever. I’m just going to echo what the developer said to us, it was to this tone “We hope this game hits PC gamers a lot, we are really keen to update it often to keep it fresh, we want PC gamers to have a game where they can play online, shoot each other and not get shot by a bush every twenty seconds.” Now, this question was sent to us, and we were a bit confused: “Why is the game so much like Sniper: Ghost Warrior?” (Aside from that being an FPS) the developer’s response: “Well we played it, hoping we could learn from it, but fact is they found a formula that we found years ago, which became Sniper Elite 1.”

We had a quick look at “Mad Cats” to see what was new with them, they had these crazy contraptions:

They were quite comfortable, they sort of moulded to your hand, but I couldn’t actually tell if it had enough buttons, because I wasn’t 100% sure which bits were buttons.

PC world had this, but nothing else that we haven’t already seen…

We played around with some Alienware tech too, as we always do at these things, there isn’t really all too much to say about Alienware. But here are some pretty pictures.

Of course, no event is complete without our friends at RePlay Events! Showing off their awesome retro section again, don’t forget to check out Play Expo in Manchester! http://www.playexpo.net/
