I’ve chosen the Xbox 360 version for this review.
When I first got Minecraft I didn’t know what to expect, it sounded overrated to me and too simple to be a successful game. Oh how wrong I was. This game recreates the joy of playing with Lego but on a much larger scale.
While mining is obviously a huge part of this game (clue is in the name) my favourite part is definitely building and creating rather than destroying. My first large(ish) scale creation was a house simply made out of dirt and I was as proud as a mother when their child starts their first day of school. Then I see the big boys… my friends had been playing a lot longer than me, some on the PC version, and they had created these immaculate buildings and towns which I thought I would never be able to achieve.
One tip for this game, teamwork is the key to success. Castles, full diamond cities and much more can be created if you have a little help from your friends! Or a few people and a big stick. My favourite thing I have created has to be my simple tree-house, the walls are mainly wood, partly tree with a little bit of glass to enjoy the view however this would have not been as quick or possible without my buddies.
I mainly play on peaceful mode, this allows you to build freely without being attacked. Nut if you want a thrill turn up the difficulty. There is nothing more terrifying than the sound of a creepers “sssssssssssssssssssss” after you’ve just finished the last part of your building. I also was once attacked in the middle of the night by a skeleton because I forgot to close my door while I was sleeping. A mistake I will never make again. While these villains are low resolution they still make me quite nervous and genuinely make me fear for my safety… but maybe it’s just me who is afraid of walking blocks. Yes? Okay then let’s move on.
There are still 2 more modes which are to be updated in (apparently) a few weeks time; these are survival mode and creative mode. Creative mode gives you all materials so you don’t have to go collect them yourself and instead can just build to your heart’s content. Survival mode is where you must use the resources around you in order to survive, you must maintain your hunger, create buildings and survive by exploring the world you have foolishly found yourself in. Despite being a sandbox game, Minecraft does have an ending in Survival mode and there are aims along the way. Xbox gamers have been waiting for this update for quite a long time and have felt left in the dark without any torches in their inventory.
So Minecraft is brilliant I say, what are the bad points you ask? Well, when you first start off and you cannot do anything it is frustrating and it requires you to learn, but practice makes perfect kids! I would only recommend the Xbox 360 version if you do not own a PC good enough to play it however if you like the Xbox community more then go for it. One of the complaints is also the 1000×1000 block limit unlike the PC version which is never ending and constantly regenerates. It is only as difficult as you want to make it and if you like a challenge, why not build a mansion made of diamonds and obsidian? Or maybe if you just want to doss around, you can always create phallic shapes and laugh at them every time you connect to your server… you know… your choice.
It’s also worth knowing that an upcoming update will see “Endermen” come into the game. They steal blocks, and Silverfish are also making their way to the xbox version, they hide inside blocks and deal damage when you chip into the block. We’ll also see the introduction of the hunger gauge, making food crafting necessary. No date as of yet!
