I’m a big Walking Dead fan, loving the comics, games and of course television series. The games have had me pretty sucked in, and I typically hammer them on the day they’re out then go through them again. But do the choices really do much?
If you’ve been playing the games, you’ll know how they work. Basically the story changes on the choices you make, but it seems that the story won’t change that heavily. You can pick who survives and who dies, who is dropped and who sticks. But they really only seem to affect a few twists and turns.
As you probably know, Clementine shares the lime light a lot, being basically a side kick. a choice comes in episode 3 where you can essentially leave everyone, but no matter if you agree or disagree to leave them, the same thing happens. This felt like a really big choice, and was kind of disappointing. After reversing over, and thinking about the choices don’t really affect the game much. There’s still a few episodes to come so maybe they’ll all add up?
But it got me thinking, how many games really let your choices run wild and drastically change everything? Sure a lot of games have endings that change, but we haven’t had one where every choice really affects the game. I always find it interesting when it compares the choices made between the community. So imagine a game where literally anyone could die, put this into the Walking Dead. I want to see if players would keep themselves alive or keep Clementine alive. Can a gamer get so attached to a character they would be willing to die and cut the game shorter for themselves?
The Walking Dead games still have me thinking ahead, of what could happen, but it rarely actually happens, instead I see a quick direct impact thing. However, that being said it can sometimes have a lasting effect, in particular Kenny has been pretty pissed at me. And that anger seems to be growing, which is good. However, no matter what I do he seems to be angry. So do I even actually have a choice of making him like me? Or is it the simple choice of “He won’t like you but you can follow him, or not.”
Catherine had a very similar pattern, the choices still lead to a finale that was very much a “This will happen” sort of thing. Taking all of this into consideration, would a game with loads of long lasting choices cost more? Because that would simply mean more game too. But, then would people be willing to pay more because they know this?
