Bosses with giant colourful limbs have always been in games, for as long as I can remember the tactic has been “Smack it in the oddly coloured bit.”
Think back to Zelda: Ocarina of time, but Capcom seem to really take it to a new level. It seems that recently, the big games that we’re looking forward to share a very similar pattern. They both seem to have taken notes from Lost Planet…
Let’s take a look at Dead Space 3 first. This time it is set on a cold, snowy planet (Think Hoth.) Nothing wrong with that, there are only so many settings you can have. And they’ve made the necromorph even bigger, great, bigger is better.
But why does it look like a Cat-G Akrid from Lost Planet 2?
Let’s break it down a bit, move the leg joints up a bit, and change the colour from black and white to black, red and yellow. Shrink it a little, now what have you got? Add some spikes too.
Let’s also take a look at the end of the recent gameplay trailer, Isaac gets eaten and it’s pretty nicely done, but it leads to this…
Looks cool.
What we have to remember is that the games play very differently. And the whole thing will be executed differently, but at the core it’s clear that Lost Planet has really set a marker down.
That yellow point is probably a weak point, it’s not a major thing but it’s becoming more frequent in the games, we’ve now seen it in Resident Evil, Dead Space and Lost Planet. We’ve asked Capcom if they would like to make any comments on this.
