GAME REVIEW: CRYSIS 2

The first Crysis was appointed the best looking game graphically on the PC turning most gamers rigs into ash. The game pushed your graphics card to the point of no return and was a beautiful achievement in gaming. The game itself was also a great experience with a lush open jungle world to unleash destruction, or creep around and snap necks it was your choice. The sequel keeps the beautiful graphics in check but has trades the lush jungle for the concrete jungle. The streets of New York City have never looked so good in a video game. The copy I played of Crysis 2 was on Xbox 360 so I can’t speak for the PC version. The game starts out with a bang, you’re a marine code named Alcatraz on a submarine in the Hudson River that gets destroyed. From there Prophet (character from Crysis 2) gives you the nano suit you will use for the rest of the game. I won’t spoil anymore of the story line from here on.

The controls of the title have been tweaked to fit the console and it feels solid. The left bumper activates your maximum armor ability, and the right bumper activates cloak. There are special nano upgrades you can unlock as you progress through the campaign that are a lot of fun. There is a tactical visor you can turn on that lets you mark enemies, ammo drops, and see tactical objects. The tactical objects can be anything from a turret you can use to tear up enemies, or an alternate route that can be used to avoid large groups of enemies. The shooter genre needs a fresh feel and I think Crysis 2 is just the cure. The one aspect that really impresses me about Crysis 2 is your ability to play the game however you would like. You could play through the campaign multiple times and take out enemies differently every time. From cloaking and moving in the shadows to power kicking cars into enemies, it’s a blast. The campaign does however start out a little slow, well to be honest the first few hours are slow to develop. The game starts to really pick up pace and become a wild ride around hour 3 but it’s well worth the wait. I myself living in NYC watching familiar monuments explode gives the game a exciting feel. The story is solid and will have you wanting to know what will come next.

The fact that your character never really speaks will take a little away from the emersion into the game but it isn’t a big deal. You will be spending most of your time looking at incredible visuals and coming up with creative ways to take out enemies. The weapons that you are able to use later in the later stages of the campaign are amazing. The alien threat lets just say becomes a more prominent part of the story, and it gives the game a push in the right direction. The AI in this game is decent I found the human enemies would some times act in foolish ways, but the alien AI seemed to be better and more aggressive. There has been talk about this game being too linear compared to the first. I think that this game is open world enough for most gamers taste. The sandbox design from the first game has been abandoned, but it has opened the game up for more action and excitement. The final thoughts I have on Crysis 2 (campaign only) are it’s a creative amazing experience that no gamer should miss this year.

MULTIPLAYER REVIEW


I kept this section of my review for last because with the Crysis 2 campaign being 10-11 hours long, I didn’t want gamers judging the game just on the multiplayer as they would Call of Duty. Isn’t it funny how you can’t review a FPS without mentioning COD? Anyways I will start by saying that Crysis 2 multiplayer is great and a lot of fun. The nano suit transitions really well into multiplayer, and you get even more abilities to unlock than in the campaign. The fun that can be had in this multiplayer is limitless. You have your traditional death match, team death match, and capture the flag type game modes. There are some really amazing maps to play on, from tight quarters mayhem, to large open urban New York city maps that are very impressive. Now here is the downside and what will make or break this multiplayer from being successful on the levels of COD or being labeled a tacked on crappy attempt to multiplayer. The lag issues and hit detection in multiplayer for this game are game breaking. They don’t occur every round but when they do you will become very frustrated and the game can become unplayable. Now if Crytek patches these issues then this multiplayer experience can compete with the likes of Call of Duty and I see it as a great addition to the online shooter market. Now lets see if Crytek steps up to the plate and delivers.
