Brave not actually that awful (Brave Review)

Brave not actually that awful (Brave Review)

July 30, 2012 |  by  |  Reviews

When I was told to review Brave I instantly assumed it would be the dullest film tie in game to date, but I was actually fairly shocked to see, it wasn’t all that bad. Nothing too amazing, but not too bad!

Now, I’ve never seen the film so this review is solely on the game, not on the relation to the film. As we know, film to game tie ins are never great, they’re rarely actually good. Brave is decent, we’ll look at gameplay first!

It has a very simply combat system, you get a bow & arrow and a sword, spin one stick to shoot, tap X to wave a sword. As you go along you unlock fancy new attacks that can be used to obliterate your enemies, it’s the usual type, ground slams etc. But they’re actually fun to use, they’re really satisfying.

The game has simple platformer elements to it, but they’re done in an interesting way sometimes. There are areas where you actually feel a sense of danger and struggle, rather than the typical “I can fall off it’s fine.” Feeling you get from games aiming to be more than they are.

The game calls in on the elements to add an interesting mechanic to the game. You can switch between various elements to reach hidden objects and make fights easier. It doesn’t add a whole lot to the game but it certainly makes it more interesting.

The game focuses on young red head Merida who accidently made her mum a bear, and her brothers bears or something. It was pretty weird. And then she goes to a witch and she’s all “Yo witch bitch make mum human” and the witch is all “No way sucker.” But then turns out to be nice, or something. I stopped following.

Her 3 bear-ly brothers (See what I did there? Because they’re bears.) Anyway, they can be used to solve puzzles the involve twisting and turning levers and fiddling with platforms.

Graphically it’s nothing too shocking, pretty decent, the water is pretty cool. The only major moan I have is that she talks too much, and that annoys me, bitches be talking when they should be shuttin’.

I’m not going to say the game is ground breaking but it doesn’t try to be, it admits what it is, a game aimed at kids. But if you hit the difficulty to max (“Brave”) then it’s actually a decent challenge. While I prefer blowing stuff up and watching blood splatter all over the map I have to admit, I enjoyed Brave quite a bit.

Here’s some gameplay, sorry about the giant border.
