Back to the 50s: Unstoppable Gorg

Back to the 50s: Unstoppable Gorg

In this 50’s styled tower defence you’ll find yourself fighting with and against a wide variety of different weapons in your attempt to defeat …. The Unstoppable Gorg.

For such a simple game the graphics are rather good, the soundtrack is rather enjoyable, it’s quite upbeat, and the story is amazingly advanced for a tower defence. Featuring a campaign alongside a challenge AND an arcade mode this game can keep you interested for hours and hours.

Quite a cool feature I haven’t really seen before in a game of this style, is the turret rotational system, whereby your towers or ‘satellites’ are placed on a fixed orbit that you can rotate at will. The problem is that you are frequently required to place multiple satellites on the same orbit, which means that when you move one, you move them all, thus potentially leaving massive areas of attack unguarded. It’s an interesting mechanic that really pushes the boat out a bit.

As you might have expected, different satellites have different strengths, weaknesses and effects; from long range missiles, to money generators. They are all upgradable of course and promise to wreak havoc upon the approaching horde of alien invaders.

What you might not have expected however is the way the towers are levelled up, research points are collected during the round, and then can be distributed between the satellites as you select which ones to take with you into the next onslaught.

It’s not a ground-breaking concept and it doesn’t have epic cinematic cut-scenes, but it is an awful lot of fun if you’re after a way to kill a few days.

Futuremark, who are the developers of this game are often hailed for their interesting games, being the minds behind Shattered Horizon, which saw players fight in anti gravity online combat. Unstoppable Gorg is also set to have an Xbox Live release, and is available on steam, as well as the iPad for only $2! Which is really worth it.

My recommendations – give it a go if you are a fan of tower defence, hell, give it a go if you’re not, it’s just good clean alien busting fun.
