We were lucky enough to take a tour around Rebellion studios and a bit of an exlusive look at Sniper Elite V2
Rebellion has two branches, Oxford and Liverpool. We visited the Liverpool offices, we were told that in Liverpool they worked on co-op side a lot. Andy McCain showed us around, and talked us through a few of their projects. Covering how they get the detail in games and how they spend their days in work.
He told us a bit of the history of Rebellion. They worked on Starship troopers, and explained that they got to see the set and props from the film. In fact, they almost influenced the second film with monster designs (Which would have been nice because the second film sucked.)
They also worked on something called “Prism Guard Shield” which is, different… Basically the American National Guard wanted some promotional items, and so Rebellion made them a lovely little game. He didn’t big the game up, but basically it’s a free FPS.
In 2008 Rebellion worked on the last PS2 Call of Duty game (CoD: World at War Final Fronts). It was revealed to us that Rebellion wanted Bayonets in the PSP game too, but due to age rating issues they had to remove it.
Now moving on to the bit we’re all looking forward to, Sniper Elite V2! We were lucky enough to get an exclusive look at the Co-Op side of things. There was three game modes :
The first they showed us was called “Kill tally” it’s basically horde mode. It reaches up to 10 waves, but the developers told us they haven’t actually reached 10 waves!
The next one was called “Bombing run” this is sort of like a retrieval game where you have to pick up parts for a vehicle, the great thing about this mode is the thought of the amount of sound you make. The map is split into smaller areas, and if you make a loud sound (such as a gunshot) in one of the areas, then the other area won’t hear you.
Finally they showed us “Over Watch” this is probably the most unique game mode, the way it works, is that you use team work to slaughter the enemy. One person “spots” and the other snipes. The “Spotter” has to carry out objectives while being protected by the sniper. In this mode the player starts hidden from the enemy, and they can time their shots with bangs in the distance to remain hidden.
The AI is fairly smart and will spot dead bodies left by the sniper, you earn extra points for killing someone that has been spotted, and if you do it quickly you get a better slow motion kill. While we were watching this we saw one of the developers shoot a guy through the window of a car, which was pretty damn epic
We asked about DLC, they’ve not confirmed anything yet obviously as the game hasn’t even launched. As a few of you know, Rebellion also work with 2000AD (A comic company) so we were hoping Judge Dredd would be in it. He isn’t, sorry
Josh noticed that the game mechanics looked a lot like Splinter Cell Conviction. We enquired a bit about this, and they confirmed they didn’t just turn to Splinter Cell during development but also to Mortal Kombat for slow motion inspiration. But who can blame them? Game developers aren’t stupid and look wherever they can for help.
They told us that they’ve entirely self funded the PC game; they explained they really want to support the PC version. Don’t get too anxious console gamers, sure we won’t be forgotten! The DLC for PC will be free too apparently! They feel the PC game is graphically better, which is great because it’s already graphically awesome on the consoles. He also confirmed that PC servers will allow you to be pretty much free for rules, so you can have grenades only etc.
A versus mode they showed us, was “Team Distance King” basically you earn points for long range kills, the longer the range the better. Obviously there are traditional game modes such as Team Death Match.
He told us that Russia would have “Interesting” pre-order bonuses, and there’s some pre order stuff for the rest of the world too. We can’t seem to hunt down the “Interesting” Russian stuff.
Finally they confirmed that it’s “Almost definite” that there will be online character customization at some point. And we may well see a pink tutu called “Custard’s Tutu”
